Result of My Study After Eight Months

October 9th, 2009

In my only previous post on a case study regarding  my skills at website promotion , I took one of my own sites as example. But due to some unavoidable commitments ( please read training)  at my regular job in real life coupled with my consolidation work on other online projects – I could neither keep you updated regularly on the project or I could update my personal blog.

It is only after nearly eight months that – I remembered about this project of mine and my personal blog which I am going to update regularly from now on.

I was just checking my performance this morning – and lo-n-behold – here are some stunning results!

For the  first keyword – education blog #9

And for the third keyword -  online education guide – I am @ #8  :)

Believe it or not – I could only do SEO / Link building on this site for only 3 weeks or so as I was pressed for other things by then.  Anyway, I am not complaining and I don’t want to push the site more as I honestly thing it still needs lots of more quality contents – which I promise to add in the near future as I am due to take more advanced training in education from IGNOU starting next January. So, it will be more easier for me to blog on education simply because it would keep me in practice with what I would learn.

However, the traffic I estimated is not as good as I expected – and – I think I know the reason. It is due to lack of inactivity on the blog. I am expecting it to double or even triple once I start blogging again as it is now a site trusted by search engines. I’ll simply be happy, if my monthly traffic reaches upto 6000 per month.

Following is the current traffic as shown in the Google Analytics  -

traffic

I am simply happy that 65% of my traffic are organic from search engines and out of them 46% plus from mother of all search engines – Google.

So, I believe, if I can keep blogging regularly – with high quality contents, it won’t be difficult for me to attract 6000 visitors per month.

I’ll keep you updated on that.

Also – I have recently got into SEOing – and my first client after almost 3 years of self-induced SEO hibernation is a small commercial start up that deals in embroidery supplies while I am in discussion with few more start-ups and established businesses. I hope, I can do the same for my clients what I did for myself. :)

Beginning of A Journey – Web Promotion and First Case Study

February 7th, 2009

I used to offer web promotion services in the initial stage of my online journey. But since then I have become a webmaster (directory owner to be precise) and occasional blogger. But being into teaching for the last eight years – I could not ignore my interest in it and so wanted to share my knowledge and experience. Subsequently, I found myself opening a blog ( education blog ) where I have been publishing some posts from time to time.

It has been a pure personal and hobby blog as it earned next to none so far. After a little bit link building effort initially, I never touched it again from promotional point of view and left it where it was. After few months I found that, its ranking on Google dropped drastically and it went to Page-2 even for its domain/brand name with out the TLD. I got worried as it was a time when  Google had been penalizing sites even if everything was alright.

It is to be noted that, I have put the site on one of the forums where I am more active. So it naturally got links from there. It seems those hundreds of forum links are of no use from SEO point of view.

So I started a new link-building campaign – submitting to old and new FREE web directories which is just one of many link building resources. After couple of weeks, I found the site is back to #2 position for its domain name.  :) This means that, the blog is in no way penalized by Google.

In the meantime, I have decided to start offering my services for web promotion based on more than two years of first hand experiences. But I had no portfolio of clients or documented proof to prove my abilities. Naturally, I am taking my own site as first Case Study.

Why Promotion is required for a site?

The one single answer to the question above is TRAFFIC.

It does not matter to which genre, niche your web site is in, if you have no traffic to it/them, you will not earn. And most of all, targeted visitors is what every webmaster, comapny yearn for. The more visitor your site has, the more sales you have, more clicks you get, more leads you drive.

With change in behavior, people are now not going directly to a web address, rather searching for millions of information that search engines like Google/Yahoo are offering. So top placement in them is a sure-fire guarantee to get highly targeted visitors.

In this regard one must first decide which keywords/key phrases he or she target based upon the kind of products or services the site is offering.

In this case study, the blog is related to offer quality information on general education. So we must first find out which keywords/phrases will bring more traffic. Hence keyword research shows –

education blog – January search volume 9900

online education – 450000

online education guide – 1000

Site specification :

DOMAIN : educationguideonline.net

Creation Date: 01-mar-2008

So it is one year old and ready to push. After some research I found the  blog already has good ranks for the first keyword on Google. It is currently placed @ #80. :) It also ranks #65th for the 3rd keyword. But for the high volume 2nd keyword, it does not even rank within 1000 of results.

At present I’ll not concentrate on Yahoo or other SE results because Google is where you get those traffic. So, from now on, my focus will be on putting valuable content and finding high quality and relevant links. Goal is to put the blog on inside top 3 for the two less competitive keywords in 3 months time.  That will make the site visible to almost 11,000 visitors. And by industry standard, If I can achieve top ranking for the two keywords, I should be getting close to 9000 visitors alone from Google organic search.

In the meantime the site domain should get higher strength and trust from Google and then plunge into the more competitive and lucrative keyword of “online education.”

So long. :)
